Paul Crawford has been defending Glasgow’s club scene and promoting nights at the reputed Sub Club since 1992. His determination and deep insight into the constantly evolving club and music industry has kept the venue right up there as one of the best loved clubs in the country. Meet one of the most dedicated club owners and promoters in the business. Read the interview

Name: Paul Crawford

What do you do?
Co-Owner and Promoter of the Sub Club, I am also a partner in a bar called MacSorleys.

How did you become involved at Sub Club?
I was a fan before anything else and used to go every week to the Atlantis night with Harri & Slam. I started promoting nights there in 1992, my first night there was called Cool Lemon and was a weekly Friday, the owner then asked me to go and work there as Promotion Manager.

Describe Sub Club in one sentence.
A haven for music lovers who want to party without hassle or discrimination.

What can we expect to hear there?
Everything from breaks, hip-hop to house and techno, do not expect to hear anything commercial. What you will hear though will be on one of the best club sound systems you will hear anywhere.

How would you describe Sub Club regulars?
Salt of the earth people, I hate trying to generalise but they tend to be a cool bunch of people with a pretty laid back attitude to life and they tend to love their music and love partying.

What’s the best thing about Glasgow?
The Sub Club, ha ha no it’s the people, Glasgow people have a great sense of humour and love to party hard.

And the worst?
Because of what Mrs Thatcher did to Glasgow there is a real problem with an underclass of people who have not worked and have learned to scam the system, add heroin into that mix and it all adds up to one scary problem.

If you could invite anyone (dead or alive) to come and perform, who would it be and why?
Oh that’s a hard one. Sorry I have to name a few. I would have absolutely loved The Clash to play that would have been incredible they are one of my all time favourite bands and if Kraftwerk are looking for an intimate club show then I’m sure we could accommodate because they inspired so much of what has happened since in electronic dance music, on a more personnel note John Martyn just to see the look on one of partners face. DJ wise I would probably say Ron Hardy or Larry Levan because they were true pioneers and lived their music. In the current climate Jeff Mills doing a disco set would be my next choice because I heard him do an inspirations set once and I think it would blow people away.

Who’s set to be hot in Glasgow in 2009?
We have a couple of new residents at our Subculture night Telford and Junior, both young guys but both of them have a great understanding of music and of the Sub Club vibe and ethos and they could not have better DJ’s to learn from than Harri and Domenic. Also a very talented young chap Andy who records under the name of Sei A on Seinan records.

Some advice to anyone visiting the city for the first time?
If anyone asks what football team you support tell them Partick Thistle.

What’s the secret behind the popularity of Sub Club?
Well if I told you it would no longer be a secret. I suppose it’s no secret really, a great team of people dedicated to the music, vibe and ethos.

Most memorable experience at the club?
Either Roy Ayers playing live during the 20th Birthday week. Or possibly Roy Davis Jnr’s impromptu vocal session when he burst into song over the records Harri was playing, apparently the first time he had done it in front of a crowd because he just felt the spirit take him there.

A moment you would rather forget?
One week after the 13th Birthday there was a huge fire in the building next door which resulted in the Sub Club being homeless for 3 years.

What are you listening to on repeat at the moment?
I don’t listen to anything on repeat my wife does that I am loving Holy Ghost’s production and I am listening to a mix by Motor City Drum Ensemble which I am totally loving. Also a couple of bands called Tiny Montgomery (Glasgow) and ID Parade have some amazing records.

Your hopes and fears for the music industry for 2009?
I really hope the music industry finds a way of embracing new technology whilst rewarding musicians and artists for their music output, that is the biggest challenge facing the industry but I personally think too that there has been some people creaming the industry for years and making far too much money from artists and consumers alike. I think with the present economic climate DJ’s and artists will have to be realistic about there fees and agents especially need to take note. There will be venues and clubs who will become victims of the slow down and there are some agents who are killing clubs by still asking for ridiculous fees for DJ’s.

What’s the most exciting thing in your life right now?
My children, Kiera 8, Dylan 3 and Anya 6 months.

It’s been 5 years since the legendary Belgian club Café d’Anvers released a compilation album. This time around the club has decided to launch a series of albums called ‘The Sound of The Underground’ mixed by international producers who play regularly at Anvers. The first release is selected and mixed by Scottish duo Silicone Soul. Of course the play-list includes several tracks by Silicone Soul themselves as well as tracks by David K, Zombie Zombie and Masomenos. The album release party is at Café d’Anvers on Saturday 7th Feb, and you can hear the event live on Awdio!
